Prof. Gibson is an organic/polymer chemist. His PhD dissertation involved alkaloid syntheses under the direction of Prof. Frank Popp. His postdoctoral research with Prof. Ernest Eliel involved stereochemistryAt Union Carbide he worked on ethylene oxide and its reactions to form oligomeric derivatives, the oligo(ethylene glycol)s called Cellosolves and Carbitols. His 15 years at Xerox were devoted to interdisciplinary study of photo-electrical phenomena and materials useful in imaging and display technologies: liquid crystals; triboelectrification, the charging of the toner particles necessary to produce the final image in xerographic copies; polymers for toner applications; development of organic photoconductors, now used exclusively in all copiers and laser printers; conducting organic polymers, including polyacetylene.

Organic chemistry and Polymer Chemistry

Vakhtang Barbakadze has his expertise in isolation and structure elucidation of a new series of plant polyethers, which are endowed with pharmacological properties as anti-cancer agents. Besides, he interested in enantioselective synthesis and biological activities of basic monomeric moiety of these biopolyethers, synthesis of enantiomerically pure epoxides as chiral building blocks for the production of synthetic analogues of natural polyethers. He has completed his Ph.D and D.Sci. in 1978 and 1999 from Institute of Organic Chemistry, Moscow, Russia and Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Tbilisi, Georgia, respectively. He is the head of Department of plant biopolymers and chemical modification of natural compounds at the Tbilisi State Medical University Institute of Pharmacochemistry. 1996 and 2002 he has been a visiting scientist at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, by University Scholarship and The Netherlands organization for scientific research (NWO) Scholarship Scientific Program, respectively. He has published more than 98 papers in reputed journals.

Emo Chiellini graduated in Chemistry in 1963 at the University of Pisa. He performed his academic career at the Department of Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Pisa and at European and Extra-community Universities as Researcher/Professor [University of Liverpool (UK), Moscow State University (Russia),University of Massachusetts at Amherst (USA), University of Sao Paulo in Sao Paulo & Campinas (Brazil), University of Nagasaki (Japan), and University of Mogadishu (Somaly) In 1980 he was appointed as Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Pisa, where he was Lecturer of Chemical Basics of Technologies until 2010 giving Course in General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Science & Technology of Materials.
