His PhD dissertation involved alkaloid syntheses under the direction of Prof. Frank Popp. His postdoctoral research with Prof. Ernest Eliel involved stereochemistryAt Union Carbide he worked on ethylene oxide and its reactions to form oligomeric derivatives, the oligo(ethylene glycol)s called Cellosolves and Carbitols. His 15 years at Xerox were devoted to interdisciplinary study of photo-electrical phenomena and materials useful in imaging and display technologies: liquid crystals; triboelectrification, the charging of the toner particles necessary to produce the final image in xerographic copies; polymers for toner applications; development of organic photoconductors, now used exclusively in all copiers and laser printers; conducting organic polymers, including polyacetylene.
